Mattram means change or transformation in Tamil
At Mattram, we define mental health as “an inner state of being in connection that includes a process of personal growth through an open perceiving, expressing and sharing of the inner and outer truth, as it is”. We focus on growth and development, not on solutions for problems.
Sharing and connection
At Mattram, we value being in connection – the connection between you and us, as well as your connection with yourself. During our interactions, we encourage sharing and building connections. We value working in a relationship based on equality, compassion and integrity.
Systemic approach
At Mattram, we take into account the context of the problem. We adopt an inclusive approach towards mental health, i.e. an approach involving the entire person involved, with complete presence in the given moment. This approach includes the whole of your being (e.g. spiritual, behavioral, mental, etc.), and is centered, not on possible illnesses or pathology, but on growth.
Awareness
At Mattram, we endeavor to increase awareness of what is. The process involves exploration, connection, and opening up to reality; while knowing that conclusions often mean the end of exploration. Conclusions can be limiting, while awareness is liberating.
Process of becoming self-aware
At Mattram, we encourage a participative process of sharing between you and us. We aim to create a safe space, a sanctuary, where real, open sharing can take place, and growth in inner awareness can be supported.
Our role as facilitators
As Mattram facilitators, our expertise is in the process that is needed to become more aware. We let you take the initiative as far as possible, and we attune ourselves to what you need. Our responsibility is to facilitate the process with empathy, an open supportive attitude, as well as structure needed to continue. We support by listening, sharing, modeling, questioning, but not by directing, giving opinions, providing solutions, making judgments, or taking sides.
Whilst Mattram facilitators use different approaches, all of these are grounded in the overall vision and philosophy of Mattram.
