Is Auroville becoming a city of cars??

Bus route planned by La nAVETTEThe steady increase in private car ownership in Auroville, as well as the hike in outside cars and autos circulating daily within the community, gives rise to the question: Is Auroville falling well behind ‘best practice’ examples of transport that are thriving in other parts of the world? This article considers plans for public transport systems in Auroville, and the accompanying interview with David considers the interconnected aspects of mobility and urban planning.Once upon a time, Auroville was a sleepy outpost comprised of dirt tracks and bullock carts. The pioneer Aurovilians moved around on cycles, carts or on foot. Motor vehicles were rarely seen, except for the Auroville shuttle bus that plied to Pondy and back. As new work areas were established throughout the landscape, Aurovilians started moving around more to accomplish multiple tasks or attend meetings, and the need to ‘save time’ felt more imperative. I hope above solution suggestions will be successful (though I have doubts....). The increased car and motorbike traffic in Auroville is most irritating and spoils the place.

Absolutely delighted to read about the initiatives for solving the problems which gives one confidence that what could have been a disaster (same old same old individual car ownership, polluting and throbbing with inequality between those who have and those who don’t. Triumph of ego!) is now being dealt with by consciousness. Without that Auroville would have been like anywhere else and no example to the world..
