Combatting alcoholism

Shankar, who was born in a local village, has been a member of the Auroville community for many years. Among his present responsibilities is looking after a dairy herd. But perhaps his most important work today is his attempt to combat alcoholism in the local villages through his work with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Here he tells his story. Alcohol in the villages Alcoholism is really a major problem in the local villages, and it is getting worse. Twenty years ago only older people were drinking, and they would drink only in the evening. But today people drink at any time, on any occasion, and boys as young as 13 or 14 are drinking. They don’t feel guilty about doing this; they want to show they are mature. All this is happening because we are no longer following our cultural standards.
